Those Perfect Moments...
My daughter is 13 years old now and still loves to spend a little time with her boring old Dad. She's a good kid. I am very lucky.
So on a recent "father - daughter outing" we went fly fishing on one of my favorite little spring creeks in Central Pennsylvania.
You know the place, right outside of "Any-Town, USA". The truth is, the place was not as important as what took place there.
After a long trip filled with iTunes and hands free phone calls, we arrived in my truck, jumped out and headed towards our favorite little trout pool. Easy enough 4x4 access but still off the beaten path that cell phones done work too well. We arrived with eager thoughts of the big one hitting our first choice of fly. Hope always springs eternal on these adventures and the feeling that something amazing will make the trip and efforts all worthwhile...
But it really didn't seem like good odds at first. As we approach the pool, we couldn't see anything happening. No shadows, no ripples and no hatch.
It made me worry knowing this was our favorite and most productive spot... my heart began to sink a little. But my little buddy with her hip boots up to her neck was ok with hanging out for a while. So we decided to sit and eat our "just in case" PB&J sandwiches. And as we waited for the sun to sink a little lower in the afternoon sky... Slowly, we began to chat about anything and everything, but in soft tones not to scare the potential rising trout. We just sat and talked for about 50 minutes. No electronic interruptions, no cellphones...just the most amazing thoughts from my little girl filled my ears. I hung on every word. we laughed and teased each other about who could catch the biggest fish. Softly the sun started to throw golden rays directly into our eyes and the gentle sounds of evening poured in from every direction. I suddenly realized that we just shared one of those perfect "father & daughter moments". The type of moment you can search for your entire life and never know it's happening. It was perfect, as perfect as those little trout flies dancing on the water. We just kept talking even while those curious and colorful spring trout began to rise. It wasn't so important to catch them at that moment. Not certain it ever really was about catching those tricky little creatures.
My daughter and I love to fly fish together. Any it's fun to catch a few fish now and then. It really is...But it's mostly about the tradition and the search for those PERFECT MOMENTS. They are out there. I promise!
